Walk through Villach’s old town
Villach, Carinthia’s second largest city, is full of surprises that can be discovered on a walk through the old town with the whole family. Austriaguide Lisbeth Stampfer guides you through her home town and shows you both well-known and hidden sides, old alleyways and idyllic arcaded courtyards. Villach is a lively, open-minded city. The mixture of tradition and modernity and the special charm of the people make it unique. At its center is the main square, which was laid out as early as the 12th century.
Not far from it are typical alleyways such as the narrow Ankershofengasse and narrow ribbed lanes with arches to prevent earthquake damage.
On the other side of the main square, you can admire one of the many idyllic arcaded courtyards. In the Paracelsus courtyard, two marble portraits commemorate the work of Theophrast von Hohenheim. Other historical highlights include the Holy Trinity Column, the Khevenhüllerhaus on the square and the parish church of St. Jakob with the highest church tower in Carinthia (94 meters). The Villach old town walk leads over and along the Drau, past the town museum, which provides information about the history of the Drau town. Other stops include the music school, a 16th century patrician house, the castle and Kaiser-Josef-Platz.
