Villach old town walk
Villach, Carinthia’s second largest city, is full of surprises that can be discovered during a walk through the Old Town with the whole family. Austriaguide Lisbeth Stampfer walks through her hometown and shows familiar but hidden sides, old lanes and idyllic arcade courtyards. Villach is a lively, open-minded city. The mixture of tradition and modernity and the special charm of the people make them unique. The focal point is the main square, which was already created in the 12th century. Only a short distance away there are typical alleys like the narrow Ankershofengasse and narrow ribbed alleys with Schwibbögen against earthquake damage. On the other side of the main square, one of the many idyllic arcade courtyards can be admired. In Paracelsushof, two marble portraits recall the work of Theophrast von Hohenheim. Other historical highlights include the Holy Trinity Column, the Khevenhüllerhaus on the square and the parish church of St. Jakob with the highest church tower in Carinthia (94 meters). The Villach Old Town walk leads across the river Drava and past it, past the city museum, which informs about the history of the Draustadt. Other stops include the music school, a patrician house from the 16th century, the castle and the Kaiser-Josef-Platz.
